Most average credit card users don't need a credit card with an annual fee. Cards that come with annual fees offer higher rewards and an assortment of travel perks and shopping benefits, but if you don't spend enough to maximize on rewards or travel enough to take advantage of the additional perks, the annual fee is an unjustifiable cost.

Choosing a card without an annual fee is much like picking any other card — you need to find the one that offers the features and benefits that are best suited to how you are going to use the card. Here are the cards I would recommend to anyone looking for a credit card without an annual fee.

Bank of America® Travel Rewards credit card

When traveling internationally, credit cards can be the most secure and convenient method of payment. Unfortunately, many cards are incompatible with the latest generation of credit card readers in use around the world that require an EMV smart chip. The is one of the only rewards cards that offers both an EMV smart chip along with no foreign transaction fees or annual fee. Cardholders also receive a competitive rewards program that features 1.5 points per dollar spent on purchases, and each point is worth one cent statement credit towards travel purchases. Plus, get a 25,000 online bonus points if you make at least $1,000 in purchases in the first 90 days of account opening - that can be a $250 statement credit toward travel purchases.
